Science Week.

Science week is an annual celebration of the life changing and fascinating world of science. Great fun was had in Cobh Mixed National School. Science week highlights how science technology and engineering are fundamental to everyday life. We also learned about famous scientist’s past and present. Look at our photos to see the experiments carried out by the children in Rhoda’s room. The following is an account from a fourth-class student.

We all chose a scientist. I chose Stephen Hawking some students chose Alexander Graham Bell, others chose Galileo Galilei and Edward Jenner.

The students did four experiments about what was magnetic and not magnetic. They rolled a balloon across a bed of thumb tacks to see if the balloons would pop.

What happened:

  1. ‘When we rolled the balloon on the bed of thumb tacks it did not pop.
  2. When we rolled the balloon on one thumb tack it popped’
  3. We did a magnetic experiment, we found out that a brass screw is not magnetic.
  4. The water experiment, we found out that surface tension can make card stick to a glass of water.

The pupils really enjoyed Science Week.
