On Tuesday 11th June Irish Cultural Officer Liam Shanahan from Cobh GAA made a visit to our school. He spoke to the children about the GAA in Cobh and what it was all about and what it offers to the community. Liam brought with him T-shirts representing the Cobh and Cork GAA teams. Liam showed us his own personal medals that he had won, which the children found very interesting.
The next day we took a walk up to the GAA ground where Liam Shanahan met us at the entrance to the main grounds known as Pairc Uí Chonaill. The children were shown how to hold a hurley properly and they took part in some hurling and football drills. Finally, we then did a tour of the GAA grounds and went into the club house for a well-earned rest before we walked back to school.
We had a great day and learned a lot about the GAA in Cobh. Many thanks to Liam Shanahan for all his time and help and the children really enjoyed it all.
