We had a visit from the Heritage Council on Wednesday 19th June. Heritage Officer Mary Barry provided us with very interesting information about the topic ‘Bees and the Environment’.
- Information such as – Bees Species in Ireland
- Pollen and Nector
- Pollination simplified for the children
- The work of the Beekeeper
- Equipment needed for Bee Keeping
- Inside the beehive and how the colony works
- Observation of live bees at work in the Hive
After discussing all of these topics with the children, it was time for them to have a tasting session where they had a chance to taste the honey for themselves.
Mary also informed the children about the plants that the bees were most attracted to. Later the children took part in a Pollinator Trail in the school garden.
The children were fascinated by the whole thing and asked lots of questions about it all. They really enjoyed the day.
