On Wednesday 16th  February  Mary Barry from the ‘School Heritage in Native Irish Wild Animal and Fabric & Fibre Project’, made a visit to our school for the day.

We began the day in the school hall where Mary introduced the children to Native Irish animals through discussion and games. The children loved examining the taxidermy animals that Mary brought with her. The animals included a hare, a hedgehog, a badger, a fox, a squirrel and a stoat. The children learned about each of the animal’s diet and about their food chain, habitat and more.

After break the children completed worksheets and the Senior pupils measured each of the animal’s height and length. The children then drew two of their favourite animals on cotton material. The senior pupils made 2 woven mats from hessian fabric and used each mat to frame their cotton drawing.

We had a great day with Mary and learned so much about our native animals.
