Cobh Mixed National School

Infection in School Policy

Since Covid parents have been much more aware of spreading infections in school. Parents are querying whether to send pupils to schooll with certain symptoms of different illnesses.

As an aid we have put an item on the school website which list many common illnesses such as,

  • Viral Meningitis
  • Bacterial Meningitis
  • Mumps
  • Measles
  • Rubella (German Measles)
  • Chicken Pox
  • Strep Throat (Strep Tonsillitis)
  • Headlice
  • Threadworms
  • Scabies
  • Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
  • Scarlet Fever
  • Ringworm
  • Impetigo
  • Winter Vomiting Disease (Norovirus)

When parents click on this link it will open a word document which advises parents on the symptoms of each illness and procedures to follow

Infectious diseases are a major cause of illness among school going children. Hand washing is the single most important part of infection control. Teaching children the skills of hand washing, along with coughing and sneezing etiquette is essential in breaking the chain of infection, regardless of the cause.

Appropriate vaccination of children, in line with the National Immunisation Guidelines, has resulted in fewer childhood illnesses.

Appropriate control measures in Cobh Mixed NS will minimise transmission both within the school, but also to the wider community.

We ask that parents inform the school immediately of any instances of infection so we can minimize the risk for all of our pupils.
