Cobh Mixed National School have received their first Health Promotion Flag and are very proud of this achievement. The Health Promotion is a three -year initiative committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle for the school and to promote the personal development and well-being of the child, to be self-confident and have a positive sense of self-esteem.

The school children are involved in many aspects of healthy activities during the school year which include, the Healthy Eating initiative which was supported by Super Troopers, Food Dudes promoting healthy eating and healthy lunches in tackling concerns about rising obesity and sugar intake and its harmful effects.

Our school garden and playground area which has gone through a great transformation thanks to the parents involved, where the children can explore the environment of the school ground and take part in the planting and maintenance of fruits and flowers and engage with nature. The new play area had a new make-over where children can take part in various outdoor activities such as hopscotch etc.

To promote Mental Health and well-being of pupils and staff we used the services an outside facilitator for Yoga. We invited Cork Mental Health to speak to the Senior Room about mental health and children. To equip pupils with strategies for friendship we introduced the programme ‘Friends for Life’ both Senior and Junior versions. We also introduced a new Stay Safe Programme.

We invited McAfee to visit the school with their Online Security Programme for kids, designed to teach kids how to stay safe online which was very informative.

Dogs Trust made a visit to the school and spoke to the children about the responsibilities of having a pet dog and what was involved in the care of them.

At present the children are taking part in Relax Kids class which is designed to incorporate movement and exercise, mindfulness and relaxation breathing techniques. This system will help children decrease stress and anxiety. Relax kids also supports good mental health, pupil self- esteem and resilience, which has shown to improve emotional wellbeing and behaviour in children.

We at the Cobh Mixed National School hope to continue our good work in promotion well-being and development of the children throughout their school life.
