Science Week: Heritage Council Visit:
The school had a day long visit from the Heritage Council during Science Week. Jessica discussed with the children the difference between materials and resources. She then asked them to name different materials
The children learned about Materials – they did an experiment on what was the most absorbent material and what materials were better for the environment, for example tetra pak which is made from cardboard metal foil and plastic. The children were shown a power point presentation discussing about materials, and the environment which amazed the children. They also discussed about recycling of glass paper and other materials. They were made aware about other countries i.e. Australia and Japan and the impact that these countries have on our environment. It shows how we are living beyond our means and pointed out to the children to rethink how we use things.
The children took part in various experiments on the day and did a lot of work on what constitutes ‘A Fair Test’
Below are some comments from the children on the day:
What I liked about today?
- I like doing the thing when you learn about the oil makes plastic it’s fun to do.
- I liked everything about today because it was really fun, and I learned new words.
What I learned today?
- I learned about capillary action.
- I learned that the warmer metal is, the stronger it gets.
- I learned plastics are bad for fish.
- I learned Science and experiments.
What else I would like to learn?
- I would like to be a Science man.
- I would like to learn about Scientist’s Job.
- If there’s a type of exploding thing that you can make and make it Big and you can touch it.
- I would like to learn about animals and do more experiments.
Many thanks to the Board of Management for financing this facilitator.

Congratulations:
Evie Cronin was very proud to be representing Cobh Mixed National School in the Munster Schools Swimming Gala 2019 in University College Limerick in October. She took part in the 50mt backstroke which she was placed 4th in the race coming in at 55.62 seconds
Evie also attended a Swimming Gala in Mallow on Sunday 24th November where she had a fantastic achievement by taking 4 seconds of her personal best time coming in at 47.14 seconds for the 50mt freestyle, (front crawl) She took 1 second off her backstroke (her favourite) coming in at 54.29 second for the 50mt. The overall table has not been released yet, so we don’t know her overall placing, but she came 1st in her heat for each. She was thrilled and we are so very proud of her. Well done Evie!!!!! We are all so proud of you.
Library Visit:
The children made a visit to the Cobh Library last Thursday 7th November to attend a talk about the Library. The librarian took the children on a tour of the library and discussed facilities that are available to them. The children were most fascinated by the 3D printer and they were very interested to learn what the library was all about. A big thank you to everyone at the Library for taking the time to spend with us. We look forward to many more visits in the future.
Dress Up/Games Day in Aid of Simon:
The children took part in a dress up day and a games afternoon in aid of the charity ‘Simon’. We were delighted to take part in such a worthy cause and the children were made aware of where their donation was going and the good use it was been put to. Simon sent the school a beautiful thank you letter which we read out to all the children. They concluded the day by taking part in a games afternoon which went down a treat. Well done to all!!!
