On Wednesday 12th June we were all very excited to go on our school tour to visit Spike Island.
Some of the children had never been there before and were very excited to be travelling by boat. We were very lucky to have beautiful weather that day. When we arrived on Spike Island we met our tour guide ‘Felicity’. She took us around the island and showed us the different prison cells that were used by the prisoners throughout the different periods of history of the island.
The children asked many insightful questions about the history of Spike Island. After lunch the children got to play in the playground and did some orienteering around the main grounds of the prison. Before we went home our tour guide took us to an indoor museum where all the army tanks, trucks and jeeps were all stored.
Finally, it was time to catch the boat home. We all enjoyed the boat trip back to Cobh. Special thanks to our parent volunteer who accompanied us to help look after the children on the day.
