OUR CUSKINNY ADVENTURE!
On Monday the 15th of June, our school went to Cuskinny Adventure Centre. We met up at the car park at 9:30. At 9:45 we went up to our waiting area.
At 10:00 we went up to our first activity Bush Craft. We first learned about how to make a fire and how to make a shelter. We then split off into 3 groups and made shelters. We then tested the shelter’s durability by pouring water over them. Let’s just say, we did really great. But for some people, their shoes were a bit wet, but it was all good fun.
At 10:45, we did drumming with an African drum called ‘djembe’. We said our names and something we liked to do. The class learned how to play certain drum patterns, and we made our own rhythms. After that, we played ‘Simon says’ with our drums by repeating rhythms when somebody says, “Simon says!”. The class had so much fun!
At 11:00 we had our small lunch in a pagoda, although we only had 15 minutes to eat, we felt like it was an hour!
When it was 11:30 we went grass sledging. where we used sledges with wheels to go down a massive hill. We were given helmets to protect our heads (some people crashed into the side they were okay). We then went over for our big lunch, after we finished our food, we went back out to a small green where we played for 10 minutes. After lunch we headed up to the Sow and Grow where we planted courgettes and lettuces. It reminded us of when we planted vegetables at school. We then put some compost in a wheelbarrow.
Sadly, all good things come to an end so we had to go home.
We were so excited to learn that we are going AGAIN!!!! On the 20th of July, we are going there again with our yoga teacher.
We can’t wait and we had an excellent time!!!!
Science at the Merck and FREE ICE CREAM!
On the 2nd of June we visited the Merck Curiousity Cube up in the GAA grounds and learned about the science of ourselves.
We walked up to the GAA pitch with the teachers and there were lots of other schools from Cobh there, the GaelScoil, St. Mary’s National School and St Joseph’s National School.
When we arrived we saw a big purple trailer, a canopy and the Merck Staff and surprise surprise, an ice cream van! We did three options to start with, they were – to learn about our genes and our DNA, and about enzymes (enzymes are little helpers that help to break down food and chemicals in our body).
They had a big telly set up and all of us had a remote with red, yellow, blue and black buttons on them. They put the questions up on the telly and we pressed the right buttons to answer.
Then we did this building activity with magnetic shapes to show how different medicines can attach themselves on to viruses so that the medicine can get rid of the virus.
Then we built pretend DNA models and made them spin, glow and then spin and glow together.
One of the staff, Max, told us that he and the team would be going to 15 different countries around Europe.
At the end we got free ice cream and really cool glasses for protection during experiments!
It was a good day!
